THE GREEN EDITION
Hello from Western North Carolina. What do we mean by green? Whether it’s the lush landscapes of summer or the hues of a home offer, green is a color of life and opportunity. Ready, set, grow!

The Grass Is Greener Where You Water It
Last month, we asked you all to help our ongoing #PickUpPlateau movement to support local businesses. My family sent complementary surprises from local vendors (such as coffee from Buck’s and treats by the Sugar Cloud Bakery in Cashiers) to anyone you nominated across the country as a “surprise of love.” Thanks to your nominations, here are just a few highlights of what blossomed:
“Dawn is taking off time from work to care for her 90 year old father who is dying. She is such a hardworking, caring person and I would just love for her to have a little something to know she won’t be alone in this.”
“Carolyn is a great mom! She works tremendously hard for her family and her community.”
“Sharon, one of our parishioners at the Church of God Shepherd, is dynamo and tireless. She deserves a world of thanks. She is a gift to our community and an unsung hero.”

Green Thumbs Up
For our featured guest, I’m pleased to introduce Dr. Jeffrey Louis Kaine, MD, aka my handsome husband, Jeff! He is a Rheumatologist with over 40 years of clinical experience and research in Autoimmune Diseases, Osteoporosis, and Arthritis and Arthropathy.
Now in his retirement, Jeff lectures and mentors often. When he’s not helping folks who treat or deal with chronic pain, he’s either tending to his orchids or gardening outside.
B: When did you first notice your enthusiasm for plants?
J: On my high school trip from Michigan to Florida seeing tropicals for the very first time.
B: What do you love most about gardening?
J: Relaxing, appreciating nature and biologic diversity.
B: Do you have any advice for people who want to “go green” at their home?
J: Rome wasn’t built in a day, go slowly.

I’ve also invited Jeff to choose this month’s musical guest to wrap up our conversation. Just like his socks, my husband has a vast repertoire of songs to choose from. His choice? Ladies and gentlemen, John Coltrane!
Jazz is 90% of what he listens to, so here’s his favorite song that we recommend playing at the house while you relax with a drink and enjoy the scenery ⛰🎷
