Last fall at the Rainbow Falls with Marina & Tiago
Chasing Waterfalls
For this month’s special guests, I’ve selected my two Portuguese Water Dogs, Marina & Tiago! Speaking on their behalf is my son, Dane Derstine, who is an educator and recently landed a new position for a school in Cartagena, Colombia!
B: Why are they called Portuguese Water Dogs?
D: They were bred to be an all-around assistant for fishermen along the coast of Portugal; they are eager and athletic companions built for water work.
B: What are some of the best waterfalls that Marina & Tiago recommend?
D: They love the hike to Rainbow Falls as it's a longer journey and then you find the pot of gold at the end — they start to feel the mist and jump in the water.
High Falls is also really special because Duke Energy releases the dam only a few times a year and the water comes alive like the Niagara Falls.
B: Dane, you’ve lived in Pennsylvania, Florida, California, China, Thailand, North Carolina, the UK and soon Columbia … how do you describe the waters here in WNC?
D: Clean, fresh and soothing. It’s magical.
